Public Health

The overall vision of Public Health is to promote greater health and well-being in a sustainable way, while strengthening integrated public health services and reducing inequalities. In order to accomplish this vision, the public health approach involves working with other sectors and departments (Disease Control/Epidemiology, Health Promotion, Mental Health, Health Information, Nutrition, Environmental Health, First Aid) to address the wider determinants of health, and with health professionals: primary health care professionals can play a key role in preventing illness and promoting health, as outlined in the Alma Ata declaration.
Public Health has led to the identification and prioritization of many public health issues facing the world today, including chronic communicable diseases,environmental diseases, zoonotic diseases, and antibiotic resistance leading to the reemergence of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. Public health plays an imperative role in disease prevention efforts in both the developing world and in developed countries through local health systems and non governmental organizations.
